Idaho Forest Group’s Chilco lumber mill turns logs into lumber for homebuilding, remodel, and repair. See how Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math are used in the process, such as: Scientific understanding of the properties of different wood species and the science of wood drying; Technology which drives the computer-controlled saws and drying kilns, and imaging technologies for quality control. Engineering the layout of lumber mills for efficient and safe flow of materials and processes; Artistic craftsmanship guiding the quality of lumber for appearance and grade; Math calculations to determine the most efficient and profitable way to cut logs into boards of various sizes while minimizing waste. *Dress requirement: flat, closed toed shoes; long pants recommended.
