Experiences to Construct Volume
Thursday August 1, 2024 10:00am - 11:00am PDT
Student success increases when they are given experiences that allow them to construct geometric measurement ideas. In this hands-on session, we will play with the ideas of area and volume to support students in their geometric reasoning. In Grade 3, students begin to learn about area. This understanding lays the foundation as they move toward fifth grade and begin exploring volume of rectangular prisms. By seventh grade, students apply their understanding of volume to more complex shapes. In this session, we will engage in a few tasks that will help you to support your students as they construct their own understanding. The ideas we will explore will be applicable to teachers from Grades 3 – 8.

STEAM: The Gateway to Literacy
Thursday August 1, 2024 10:00am - 11:00am PDT
As educators, we are tasked with “fitting” in a thousand content related learning goals and it feels overwhelming. When we mull over our standard books and get to planning our lessons, science can easily be the FIRST thing to be eliminated for the sake of doing the “more critical” literacy and math standards. This can often lead us to feel guilty about skipping the stuff that truly engages students and fills our classrooms with joy. Can prioritizing STEAM result in stronger readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators? Let’s play with integration planning strategies that will bring more joy, engagement, and SCIENCE experiences into your classrooms. In this session, I will share my story and experiences, as well as super practical strategies, that have led to amazing student achievement in science, as well as a ton of messy, engaging, and inspiring science experiences.

Think Make Create (TMC) Labs Use STEM to Teach Critical Thinking
Thursday August 1, 2024 12:30pm - 1:30pm PDT
Think Make Create (TMC) Labs build critical thinking and other “future ready” skills with fun, hands-on, inquiry-based STEM activities. Critical thinking helps students excel in all academic areas, and employers say it is one of the essential “soft” skills lacking in today’s workforce. By building these skills in our students from an early age, we equip them to succeed in school and the workplace. TMC Labs’ activity guide—covering art and design, electronics and engineering topics—promotes the development of critical thinking through tinkering and making from a young age. TMC Labs professional development sessions equips educators to incorporate cross-cutting concepts and science and engineering practices into these STEM activities. Attend this session to learn how to access the TMC Labs program and resources, incorporate critical thinking into your lessons, and practice a hands-on, inquiry-based STEM activity with your peers.

STEAM-based Activities for Young Ecologists
Thursday August 1, 2024 1:45pm - 2:45pm PDT
Harnessing younger students’ innate curiosity about the natural world and desire to protect it can be done with hands-on classroom activities that build STEAM skills, increase environmental literacy and show sustainable paths forward. In this session, the presenter will facilitate a series of interdisciplinary lessons that involve collecting and analyzing data, creating 3D models and working collaboratively on solving authentic problems. In one activity, participants solve word problems and use packing peanuts to model CO2 production and absorption in carbon sinks. In another, they use engineering skills in experimenting ways to clean up a local river. In yet another activity, they explore the importance of green spaces on human well-being and design an imaginary city to meet the green space needs for its residents. Activities support Idaho State Content Standards in Science, especially ESS-3 (Earth and Human Activity) and Ecosystems (LS-2).

The Generation Skeptics program teaches students to ask questions and be skeptical while questioning their own beliefs and opinions. For example, in our “Power of Words” lesson, students learn the importance of multiple trials and double-blind protocols when designing experiments. In “How To Sell Pseudoscience,” students will learn to identify the gimmicks used to sell pseudoscientific products. It is our hope students will learn to spot nonsense when they see it on TV or social media. We also have lessons teaching students to discern between credible and non-credible sources, and many more. We have guest speakers who can Zoom into classrooms and discuss and discuss these topics for free. Teachers around the country are starting GenSkeps clubs at their schools.

Succeeding in the Idaho Science & Engineering Fairs (IDSEF)
Friday August 2, 2024 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
The Idaho Science & Engineering Fairs (IDSEF) provide high school students with an exciting opportunity to engage in original STEM research and present to an authentic audience. Not only that, but top projects can earn substantial financial awards and even the opportunity to represent Idaho in the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF)—the world’s most prestigious high school research competition—at no cost.

This year marks a new start for IDSEF, after being restructured as a joint offering from Idaho STEM Action Center and the Idaho STEM Ecosystem to increase alignment with ISEF and on-the-ground support for educators. In this session, you will learn about the revised structure of IDSEF, how to get your students involved in your region’s fair, and strategies/resources to help them meet the rigorous expectations of the International Rules for Pre-college Science Research (which govern both IDSEF and ISEF).

Cougar Bay Wetlands Restoration Project
Friday August 2, 2024 12:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
America’s people, economy and wildlife rely on healthy lands and waters. Restoring ecosystems can slow climate change and bring back lost biodiversity. Building long-lasting, sustainable partnerships is key in ecosystem restoration. Cougar Bay Wetlands is a model for such partnerships. The BLM Idaho Coeur d’Alene Field Office is working with partners such as the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, LKE, Ducks Unlimited, USDA Forest Service, Nature Conservancy and the Coeur d’Alene Basin Restoration Partnership to restore these wetlands, which were severely degraded as a result of decades of agricultural use and highway impacts. Stream channelization, ditching, and draining altered the hydrology and reduced the wetland to a monoculture of invasive reed canary grass. After years of work, and the partners working together, the preserve is now a popular area for hiking and bird-watching. The Nature Conservancy reports 34 rare animal species and 27 bird species known to use this site.
As you tour this area, you will learn the step by step process and significant progress made in the ecological and recreational value of this wetland and its future goals.
